Sunrise

It was a summer day, the hottest day and that was why I couldn't sleep more.I got up and I sat in my bed, I closed my eyes to think what I was going to do, the clock showed me it was 6 o' clock in the morning, so I got dressed and I came out from home. At the beginning, the only I did was going round and round the little village I was on vacation, but lately something appeared in my mind, the sunrise was starting. Run, that's what I did, ran to the harbour, to sit in the biggest stone to have the best sight of this magical landscape. When I arrived nobody was there, the loneliness was involving my body, so I looked around to take the best place, I sat down in a stone that was huge and the sunrise kept all my attention.
When the sunrise was finished I closed my eyes, there were no sounds, it was full of peace and I felt that I was better than never before. But suddenly something made me feel fear, a hand was on my shoulder, I turned my head slowly and a smile appeared in my face.

THE WOODEN BOWL

Once upon a time a frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and a four-year old grandson. The old man's hands trembled and his step faltered. The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandpa's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass often milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and his wife became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about grandpa!," said the son. "I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor!". So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, grandpa ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the family table. Since grandpa had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. Sometimes when the family glanced in grandpa's direction, he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before dinner, the father noticed his son playing with the tools and some wood on the floor. He asked the child, "What are you making?" And the boy answered, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mum to eat your food from when you become old people." The chils smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandpa's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

Reading, the key to success

Reading is, from my point of view, a really complete activity, and also an important way to learn. It’s really important for the people in our society to read, if you read you’ll be near of your success.

First of all reading is an amazing way to study a language. By reading you’ll learn a lot about the language. Spelling, grammar, vocabulary, writing… all these aspects will improve if you read a lot. If a child reads a lot since he’s really young, he’ll be able to talk and write better in the future.

In addition, reading is amazing. When you read you can imagine your stories as you want. It’s an extra intellectual effort, but it’s at long recompensed. Because reading develops your imagination in a society where everything is straight and that don’t help people develop their imaginative profile. And above all, reading is amusing. An amusing way to learn. If you think a little about that, you’ll realize that there aren’t a lot of activities with them you learn and you have fun.

Finally, reading you grow up as a person. Books are full of important lessons for your life. Books teach you about friendship, love, honor, working… These bonds that aren’t really supported in the modern society, will make you more sociable and good person.

In short, reading is, from all views, a good habit.

The TV became alive!!!!!!

It was a dark night, with a lot of dark clouds, but it didn’t rain. I was with my family in the living room, watching the TV and suddenly a lightning fell off and touched the TV aerial. Sheet! The TV broke up! We’d have to choose a different way of amusement.

We decided to play cards. We were playing bridge, and I was wining when an other lightning fell off and touched the aerial too, but this time, it repaired itself, and the image returned.

We where talking about finishing the game when the TV fell of the little table and started to jump very high. It started to run and it hided behind the sofa. I and my little brother caught the TV. It started to do loud noises, but we caught it more. Then, a big mouth with sharpened teeth appeared on the monitor. It started trying to bite us so we loosened the TV. It ran away.

It went upstairs where the desk is placed. It started to crush all the papers on the table. It destroyed too my English homework, so, I had to remake it the next day. It destroyed a dictionary and the book that my mother was reading. Luckily, the library had got doors and they weren’t broken. It went to the stair and it went downstairs. It moved for all the flat, it went to the kitchen, to the rooms. It broke the sheets, the wardrobe... And it went to the window. It jumped and it broken up. The next day the electric employee took it to the factory and they repaired it.

So, I give you a piece of advice, if there is a storm, turn off the TV!

The texts of some subjects, (like History, Catalan, Spanish, Economics ...), explain the lesson, but the teenagers can't have a discussion about wherever that teacher has explained. Lessons explain the world but don't criticize it, and it doesn't give us options to discuss about the world. Then, when the people need to create their ideals, they can't, because they have not discussed during their young age.

I really expect your collaboration in all the tasks we have ahead, being the first one to write on this magazine, which is yours. You can write in any of the foreign languages you study: English, French or German. You can also leave an oral message using the podcast.
Candide ou l’optimiste. Voltaire

Opinion Personnelle :

ANZAC Day

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps so, ANZAC Day, is an Australian and New Zealand celebration. It is not their national day, but it is even more important than that: on 25th April Australians and New Zealanders celebrate their first baptism of fire in the battlefields of Gallipoli, Turkey.

It was the year 1915. The First World War had broken out a year ago and Australia and New Zealand, which were British Dominions, were eager to show their loyalty to the Allied Goverments of Britain, France, Italy and Japan that fought against Germany, Austria, Russia and the Ottoman Empire. In the words of Andrew Fisher, the Australian spokesman, they were determined to support Britain to "our last man and our last shilling". This is why they decided to organise a volunteer army for overseas service. The response in both countries exceeded all expectations and in three months they had enlisted and trained 20,000 men in Australia who joined the two brigades formed in New Zealand. On 1st November the combined contingent known as ANZAC sailed from Albany to Egypt, via Suez, to meet the rest of the allied expedition.
The plan was to capture the Gallipoli peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied Navies so as to conquer Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. On 25th April they landed at Gallipoli where they met fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. It was a day of chaotic, heroic and bloody fighting in which the ANZAC lost 1,000 men. The campaign lasted for eight months and in December evacuation of the peninsula was ordered. The result of this futile holocaust after eight months was 42,000 deaths out of which 8,587 were Anzacs not to mention the 19,367 wounded in action.

The news of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians and New Zealanders at home and 25th April quickly became the day on which they remembered the sacrifice of those who died in the war.

St. George's Day

April 23rd is England’s national day. St. George’s Day is also celebrated here. So, let’s go to know something about it!
St. George is the patron saint of England. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the British flag. St George’s emblem was adopted by Richard ‘The Lion Heart’ and brought to England in the 12th century. The king’s soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.
The real St George was a brave Roman soldier who protested against the Romans’ torture of Christians and died for his beliefs. The popularity of St George in England stems from the time of the early Crusades when it is said that the Normans saw him in a vision and were victorious.
One of the best-known stories about Saint George is his fight with a dragon. But it is highly unlikely that he ever fought a dragon, and even more unlikely that he ever actually visited England. Despite this, St George is known throughout the world as the dragon-slaying patron saint of England. In addition, Saint George is always depicted as a knight carrying a shield with a red cross, generally sitting upon a horse.
To end, I also want to explain you how they celebrate this day. By tradition, April 23rd is the day for a red rose (the English national flower) in the button hole. However, unlike other countries, England doesn’t celebrate it like Americans celebrate 4 July with fireworks. In fact, you are more likely to see big St Patrick parades in England celebrating Ireland’s National Day, more than you would see any sign of St Georges Day being celebrated. This was certainly true in Manchester in 2003, when St George’s Day was virtually ignore soon after the biggest St Patrick’s Day celebrations in the city’s history. As I read in an article, in England for average people St George’s Day is just another ordinary day. Maybe that’s why they don’t have the same tradition as Catalans, where we give a rose or a book to our couple.

Last Tuesday, a lot of Catalans students and some students from La Pobla went to Manresa.
There, we celebrated the Sports Day.
We practised football 4x4, basketball 4x4, Shoot ball 8x8, Korfbal 4x4 and Volleyball.

● Korfbal 4x4:
In this game, there is a very high basket. When the player has the ball, can't move, he only can throw the ball or give it to other player.

● Shoot ball 8x8:
In this game, there are two zones. In one zone there is one group in the other zone the other group.
You play it with two balls, and the players have to touch the rival with a ball.

We could do other things of sport.
● We could go to the Playful zone. There were some ingenious and ludic games. They were made with recycled material .
●We could go to the sports centre, and watched some demonstrations of hip-hop, pop, rap, funky, aerobic, etc.

It was e very sportive and funny day.

Aggressive Advertising?

I will talk about and interesting thing that occurred one month ago in our country and now it’s very talked other time.
The company Dolce&Gabbana published an advertisement that brought a lot of problems because many women in Spain thought that it was a fact of male chauvinism, for this reason the “Instituto de la mujer” forbade the advertisement in Spain.
At first the company was very infuriated with Spain and they said that Spain wan an old country, but one week later this advertisement was forbidding in our countries so the company decided to retire it from around the world.
But now this thing is more talked in Spain because the company Dolce&Gabbana has retired all his advertisements in Spain, it seems like the company wants to punish the Spanish government so they retire all his advertisements.
The president of the association of users of the communication in Spain said that forbidding the advertisement was too much extreme but the decision has already been taken and now we have to accept the consequences.
I think the best thing to know if the advertisement is good or bad is to question people what they think so I propose you to say your opinion about this topic because I think it’s very interesting.
The photo above is one of the forbidden ones.

Saint Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17 to honor Patrick, Ireland's patron saint. Almost 1500 years ago the patron saint and national hero of Ireland was born to a Gaelic family who had migrated to Britain. For 16 years, Patrick lived a normal life as the son of a prosperous landowner and magistrate until he was captured and forced into slavery. Patrick spent 6 years herding sheep. He escaped and returned to Ireland to do missionary work.

What's good luck on Saint Patrick's Day?
- Finding a four-leaf clover (that's double the good luck it usually is).
- Wearing green.
- Kissing the blarney stone.

On Saturday 10th March, many people from Lleida and other towns came to La Pobla de Segur to celebrate the famous Flamisell Olympics. This important event started on 1982.

People can participate chosen the prove that they like: athletics, jumping ...A part of participating, you can make new friends, or walk and look the other proves. All that and much more is the Olympic program.
This year, there has been people from Lleida, Balaguer, France, Tremp, Isona, and many villages and schools or athletics clubs.

The objective of the Olympics I that your school win a lot of medals. All the winners give their points to their school.

The first prize was for Santa Anna School, the second for IES La Pobla de Segur and the third prize was for the Mater School.

I think that the really spirit of the Olympics is to have a very good experience. The most important thing is to participate!!

Olympics are good for many things, the first is: do sports. Because to do sport isn’t bad, it is very healthy. In other towns, there are other Olympics, but Flamisell Olympic is wonderful and fantastic.

I like it because it is a special celebration and after the competition there is a big party for all the participants.

“No tot són flors entre roses i clavells”

We made it to get money for our final course travel. And we got a lot of money.

It was a “bodeville” and a humorous play too, people laughed a lot. It was about two sisters that stole the boyfriend to each other.

It took us a lot of time to prepare it; we have rehearsed it since the last course with the help of the manager, our Catalan teacher Agustí.

But the actors and the actresses aren’t only who have worked in this play, because all the other people in our course have helped us.

It was very successful; many people came to see us.
We are very happy because the people who came told us that it was amusing.

We were very happy too because it was our first experience and it was great!!!!

On Carnival Day part of the students of 2nd of ESO made a party.
The party was in the garage of one of the student’s house. We ate pizza, chips, cheese, bread with tomato…, and we listened to music and danced.
It was very funny, 5 girls wore a black dress and painted their faces on white, 4 or 5 boys wore a mask or other things and the rest didn’t disguised.
After dinner, we went to a square and met with other people, angels, devils, cows…Everybody was wearing a fancy dress.
After an hour people returned to their houses but some others went to the disco.

St. David's Day, The National Day of Wales

St David's Day is celebrated in Wales on 1 March, in honour of St David (Dewi Sant), the patron saint of Wales. He was a Celtic monk, abbot and bishop, who lived in the sixth century. He spread the word of Christianity across Wales.

The most famous story about Saint David tells how he was preaching to a huge crowd and the ground is said to have risen up, so that he was standing on a hill and everyone had a better chance of hearing him.
St David's Day is commemorated by the wearing of daffodils or leeks. Both plants are traditionally regarded as national emblems.

On St David's Day, some children in Wales dress in their national costume, which consists of a tall black hat, white frilled cap and long dress. The national flag of Wales, depicting a fiery red dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) against a green and white background, is also flown.

Es gibt Karneval in viele Länder aus der Welt. Ein sehr bekant is in Venedig, Italien. In Catalunya der Karneval von Sitges ist sehr berühmt auch.

1. I can be myself when I am with you.
2. Your idea of romance is dim lights, soft music, and just the two of us.
3. Because you make me feel like I have never felt before.
4. I can tell you anything, and you won't be shocked.
5.Your undying faith is what keeps the flame out of love alive.
6. You and me together, we can make magic.
7. We're a perfect match.
8. Thinking of you, fills me with a wonderful feeling.
9. Your love gives me the feeling, that the best is still ahead.
10. You never give up on me, and that's what keeps me going.
11. You are simply irresistible.
12. I love you because you bring the best out of me.
13. Your terrific sense of humor.
14. Every time I look at you, my heart misses a beat.
15. You're the one who holds the key to my heart.
16. You always say what I need to hear (You are perfect).
17. You have taught me the true meaning of love.
18. Love is, what you mean to me - and you mean everything.
19. You are my theme for a dream.
20. I have had the time of my life and I owe it all to you.
21. And, of course, your intelligence, 'cause you were smart enough to fall in love with me ;-)

We have had the back of the Generalitat de Catalunya and of our Town Hall. The whole experience has been wisely guided and assessed by Manel Dalmau (a documentarist) and our teacher of History Ramon Jordana. We have divided the class in six groups and each group did a documentary about a different story. First, with the History teacher, we carried out a research to know what life was like in those far away years. Afterwards we learnt how to make a film with Manel. He taught us how to handle a professional camera, how to set a film, how to write a script, etc. We saw and analyse many films too, to know the different things we could do. We had a limit of only 10 minutes for each story, and the six stories will make a film of one hour. The stories are: The Last Photography, Café Afternoons , The Missing People’s Labyrinth, Sex in Difficult Times, Sixteen and Already a Soldier, and Imperfect Triangle. We are going to present it in March in the cinema of our town, and then in Salamanca, Madrid, Valencia, and there is the possibility of showing it in Colombia. We have worked a lot during the first and part of the second term, but we have learnt and enjoyed it a lot, and now we are very proud of our work and we hope the people in our town will enjoy it too.

Below you can listen to a song that represented a whole generation of Catalans that lived throughout that time.
